Ep#2 Joost Bakker says “GROW SOME FOOD”

Grow some food.
Plan ahead (to avoid packaging).
Prepare (cook from scratch).

We visit Joost at his Future Food System, FedSquare, Melbourne on the lands of the Kulin Nations.

In Joost’s future, our homes provide shelter, produce food and their own energy.

futurefoodsystem.com

Joost wants us to grow food where we live.

He says there are a billion houses in the world – imagine if all of these had some soil on the roof and grew some stuff.

Joost wants us to turn our backyards, garden walls, (even bedrooms!) and rooftops into mini-farms.

But for now, he wants us to just grow something we can eat.

TO DO LIST:

  • Plant something (anything!) to eat at home.
  • Prepare (take your lunch to work – no packaging).
  • Prepare from scratch.
  • Connect with your neighbours and communities to collaborate, share and grow some food closer to home.
  • Google ‘community gardens near me.’

Ep#1 Stephen Curry says “Keep Food Scraps from the Bin

Keep food scraps from the bin and get them back into the soil.

We visit Stephen at home in the beautiful Macedon Ranges, Victoria.

After rambling about cow farts and burps, Stephen says “save food scraps from the bin.”

Food scraps in landfill create methane – a toxic gas 20x worse than the emissions from our cars.

Saving food scraps from your bin + getting them back into the soil, makes healthy soils to grow more food, and draws more carbon out of the atmosphere.

TO DO LIST:

  • Get a kitchen caddy (a container from Vinnies will do).
  • Get a worm farm (we dig wormlovers.com.au)
  • Get a compost bin.
  • Get some chickens.
  • Wizz scraps with water in a blender for a disgusting smoothie to dig back into the soil.
  • Got no garden? Live in an apartment? Give your scraps to neighbours, friends or family who can get those nutrients back into the soil where they belong.
  • Google your local council options for organic waste.

Look out for the ‘easter egg’ in this episode.
